About Us

Vinnies Healthy Homes program was established in 2021 as a response to insights gained while working alongside OurPower to enroll new customers in affordable energy plans. Through the stories shared by customers, it became evident that many were not experiencing the expected savings due to various factors, including inadequate home conditions. Despite accessing affordable energy through OurPower, customers were unable to fully benefit from it because their homes did not meet required standards. Recognizing the impact on their well-being, we embarked on a mission to delve deeper into our customers’ living situations. This exploration revealed that some customers felt trapped in substandard rentals, fearing eviction if they voiced concerns about living conditions. In response, we initiated an educational campaign to empower our customers with knowledge about their rights and how to ensure safe living environments in their homes. Through the Vinnies Healthy Homes program, we strive to support our customers in achieving safer and healthier living conditions.

What is Involved in our Healthy Homes Program

Our assessors visit your residence to evaluate and offer recommendations on practical strategies for enhancing both your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Under our Healthy Homes initiative, we provide three distinct assessment options: one tailored for homeowners, another for tenants, and a third for individuals planning renovations or construction. These assessments are complimentary for all residences in the Waikato region, and they are also offered free of charge to Good Power customers. We have a team who are certified home performance advisors and Home fit certified.

Why is Healthy Homes Compliance so Important ?

Close to 600,000 households in New Zealand are in rental accommodation, and local research indicates that rental properties generally exhibit lower quality standards compared to owner-occupied residences. Studies demonstrate a clear connection between cold, damp, and mould-infested homes and adverse health effects, particularly impacting conditions like asthma and cardiovascular ailments.

Enhancing the standards of rental housing not only benefits the health of New Zealanders who rent but also leads to reduced medical expenses and fewer hospitalizations. Additionally, warmer and drier homes are less susceptible to mould and mildew issues, safeguarding landlords’ investments effectively.
